Chapter Fourteen

#ACCEPTED

Nicky stood in her kitchen wearing leggings and a hoodie, her phone clasped in her hands. Patience had never been one of her virtues, but this was getting ridiculous. Why hadn’t Libby phoned her back? And why was Alec at Libby’s house?

She was debating how to proceed, and whether she should yell at Libby or at Alec first, when her phone suddenly rang. The sound echoed through her quiet kitchen. She jumped and nearly dropped it, but it wasn’t Libby or Alec calling her.

“Chase?”

“Mom. First of all, I’m fine.”

Warning bells went off in her head. Chase had gone out to dinner with Rex for the first time since Rex left. She didn’t like it, but Chase insisted he needed to get it over with. This could not be good.

“What happened?”

“I’m at the police station. Dad got another DUI. Uncle Billy said he could give me a ride home, but I’ll be a little late, and I didn’t want you to worry.”

Nicky closed her eyes, fighting the wave of fear rushing over her. “You aren’t hurt?”

“No. I promise. I met him in front of the library, and when I saw how wasted he was, I refused to get into the car with him. He got mad and took off. He ran straight into a telephone pole. He didn’t make it a block down the street. He’s okay, but the car is totaled. Of course. Not the first time, right?”

“No, it’s not the first time.” Nicky blinked away tears, wishing Chase hadn’t witnessed it. “I’m so glad you didn’t get in the car with him.”

“Yeah. He’s my dad and all, but I don’t want to be around him anymore. I’m done. But there’s just one thing.” He lowered his voice. “He doesn’t have enough to post bail. He said if you posted it and gave him back his ring, he’d sign the divorce papers.”

Asshole. Of course, he did.

“I’ll think about it, but we’ll let him sober up first. What time will you be home?”

“In an hour or two. Uncle Billy has to finish up some paperwork.” There was a short pause. “I love you, Mom.”

Nicky could barely speak. “I love you too.”

She wanted to rush over to the police station right now and get him, but she knew Uncle Billy would bring him home safe and sound. It was more than his father would have done.

When she heard a knock at the door, she wiped the tears from her cheeks. She half expected to see her father standing there, thinking he may have heard the news, but it wasn’t her dad. It was Alec.

He took one look at her and frowned. “What is it, Nicky? Is everything okay?”

He reached for her, his touch so gentle it made her come completely undone. To her great horror, she burst into tears—a total blubbering mess.

Alec pulled her close, engulfing her in his strong arms as she sobbed out the story of what had happened. He led her over to the couch, made her sit down, and knelt in front of her, holding her tight, until she finished.
